Harrisburg Hospital
As part of Pinnacle Health System's Consolidation and Modernization Project,
Harrisburg Hospital included major additions and renovations. In joint
venture with The Schunkewitz Partnership of New York, Murray Associates
provided design services for this ambitious project which spanned five
years at a construction cost of over $61 million.
In order to maintain full operation of the facility, the project was
divided into 26 separate phases. The project began with a complete upgrade
to all of the electrical and mechanical infrastructure, including main
building power, fuel systems, steam systems, water systems, communications,
nurse call and code blue, ATC, and emergency power.
Additions to the facility included a 34,000 square foot, six-story patient
tower, a 7,100 square foot addition at the third floor level to house
five new operating rooms, and a 4-level, 272-car parking facility.
Site conditions would not allow additional on-grade construction, so
a two-story 7,800 square foot space was built beneath the existing nine-story
structure to accommodate imaging and dialysis functions. This challenging
phase involved substantial structural work on the existing foundations
and building columns.
Design and construction of the new patient tower was challenging as well,
as it consists of floors five through ten and is situated above the existing
third floor, housing active operating rooms which were required to function
without lost time.
Over 230,000 square feet of the 457,000 square foot facility was renovated,
involving total gut and rebuilding of virtually all acute care and procedure
areas along with patient rooms and support areas.
