USPS General Mail Facility
The 600,000 square foot Harrisburg General Mail Facility (GMF) is one of the largest mail sorting facilities in the United States Postal Service system.
Located on a sixty acre suburban site near an interstate highway, the building has three office floors; as well as a mechanized workroom on two floors plus a mezzanine.
There are 950 vehicle parking spaces. The 137 dock spaces (including forty-four carrier vehicle spaces) are located at both workroom levels to take advantage of the slope of the site. Mail is moved vertically by conveyors and on a driverless tractor ramp.
The steel frame building is faced with insulated precast concrete panels, and brick at the offices. The offices include a retail post office, personnel support facilities, and general offices.
The GMF is fully air conditioned. An advanced thermal storage system, utilizing ice, reduces energy costs .
The Vehicle Maintenance Facility (VMF), on its own ten acre site across a public street from the GMF, contains 24,000 square feet and is faced with brick and precast concrete trim.
