Kirby Hall

The goal of this project was to introduce contemporary electrical, communications, heat, air conditioning and sprinkler system infrastructures into a 60 year “Williamsburg” style facility while maintaining the exterior in its present state.

Murray Associates was commissioned to provide complete architectural design including selection of all the interior furnishings and finishes.

The facility houses 78 students, a resident assistant in a separate apartment, a coffee shop and a multipurpose room. The alterations of the interior spaces included a new resident apartment carved out of an existing student suite, all new interior partitions, new toilet rooms, new flooring and ceiling throughout. The top floor contains a full apartment for the use of the Benefactor. A new lounge/recreation area and study suite is located on the third floor.

The significant public spaces including the lobby, living room and library receive new ceilings, lighting, flooring and furnishings all in context for a building of this time period.

In an effort to maintain the integrity and ambiance of the Williamsburg style of the facility, a small, external structure was constructed to conceal the external fire systems.
